Boston Eight-Hour League is established.

September 2, 1869

The successor to the Grand Eight Hour League (est. 1863)[1865-CVG], it is founded by George McNeill and Ira Steward with headquarters subsequently located at 14 Bromfield Street. Seward, the first president, later writes, “Men who labor excessively are robbed of all ambition to ask for anything more than will satisfy their bodily necessities, while those who labor moderately have time to cultivate tastes and create wants in addition to mere physical comforts.”
